First time rider, Tells us about her training tips

Marina Ranger won a competition with our Cycling Insurance partner PedalSure to participate in the Etape Caledonia. She tell's us how her training is going and what She has planned for this year.

I’ve been cycling now for 1.5 years. In December ‘17 I picked training up again for the 2018 season in anticipation for the ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Champs in July where I will be representing GB for my age group. A month later, I’ll be cycling 3,115km from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe to Cape Point in South Africa with The Trailblazers Club; a group of eight endurance adventurers raising money for charity. It’s safe to say I’ve got enough cycling this year to have to train for!

Cycling training is part of my (rather structured) triathlon routine. I train on my indoor turbo machine twice a week for roughly an hour while using the weekends to go outdoors for a long steady ride that is on average 100+/-km. Each session has a different focus, whether that be sprints, hills, strength, distance or nutrition and hydration in preparation for race day. On top of this, I swim and run three times a week and do strength and conditioning twice a week. The three sports complement each other perfectly and have helped keep me injury free (tough wood!).

Etape is my first race of the season and what better way to kick things off than being in the stunning Scottish Highlands. I have luckily been given the opportunity to race in Etape through PedalSure. I insure both my road and TT bike on PedalSure and won a competition they put on to take part in one of their sponsored events. The Scottish Highlands are such a beautiful part of the UK and the perfect escape from busy working life in London during the week. This will be my first time on wheels in Scotland (I’m usually trail running) so don’t have very specific race expectations. One aim I take with me in every race I do is to enjoy it, take in the scenery and learn from the experience. Training races are the perfect opportunity to test out what works for you and what doesn’t so you can take what you have learnt with you to your ‘A’ race. At Etape, I’ll be focusing on cycling my own race, practicing my nutrition and hydration race strategy and finally my bike handling skills in what I can only imagine will be some very epic ascents and descents! I can’t wait!
